This was a NIGHTMARE to season. Removing the rust, buildup, and old seasoning from this piece was not nearly as easy as a skillet, but was a BREEZE compared to the seasoning process. The first round of seasoning is the MOST important round. Without the seasoning, the piece will rust, and it has NO seasoning after stripping it down to bare iron. You need to make absolute sure you oil up every square millimeter or else the spot you missed will be rusty after you take it out of the oven. The first round of seasoning (the oiling process) is also the most time consuming round because I oil up the pieces cold. I don’t like to heat the pieces because flash rust sets in very quickly that way. Oil spreads easier on a warm piece, but I don’t have that luxury on the first round. After the piece(s) have a single layer of seasoning, it’s much easier to oil up, and remove the excess oil. The first oiling process took me nearly an hour. The other two rounds took about 15 minutes- big difference. Despite being major pain in the ass, this restoration came out fantastic. Waffle irons are some of the most beautiful (and sought after) pieces out there.
