As an employee in the deli, I can tell you that in theory online ordering is great but corporate expects managers to keep labor hours low and increase productivity and A LOT of the time theres not an extra person dedicated to online orders. The same employees taking walk in customers to the counter have to somehow fit in online orders between customers. This can work sometimes if it’s slow but if it’s a busy location or a rush it’s extremely hard to keep up. I’ll have orders coming due in 10 mins, try to start it, a customer walks up, I have to stop and help them, then they ask for a million things then the phone rings and I have to pick that up then next thing I know that online order is 5 mins past due and walk in customers have their arms crossed, are huffing and puffing and staring at me and I’m scrambling to get that online order done while the people in store are treating me as I’m ignoring customers. Most people think there’s a dedicated person doing online and that’s not true. We bounce back and forth between sliced meats, subs online orders, phone in orders, people asking where this or that is on the sales floor and we have to stop and go help them find stuff, random mishaps are common like people dropping a soda or glass jar in front of our deli we need to stop and go help clean up, slicers run out of time every 4 hours and must be broken down and cleaned to remain in compliance with health regulations, if I’m the only one on the slicers taking customers and I get online orders and people are standing there staring at me and my slicer times out I have to unplug it and break it down to wash it and things get behind. There’s never extra help and half the time the manager is also taking customers. There’s also platter orders, catering stuff and preordered chicken for large quantities. We are literally always struggling and behind and can’t keep up with the demand. Corporate will not increase hours because the greed in corporate America to make another billion dollars and always increase profit year after year endlessly is a real thing.

The truth is they understaff it purposely as a way to save money on labor. It’s not the associates fault, the deli manager’s fault, or even the store manager’s fault. Everyone complies within a corporate mandated amount of hours available and that rings true in every department. The reason it appears worse in the deli is an ever larger problem. The deli has grown too much too fast in the past decade as consumer demand has soared post-Covid. Most delis are not equipped properly or have sufficient space to accommodate everything they offer.

I ordered subs a few weeks ago, took 90 min to make with 5 yes 5 people just standing around in the deli with 1 new Person trying to keep it together

Because it allows ppl to order up to I wanna say 8-10 subs at a time and say they want that ready to be like 2:50 but then another online order can come thru after that with 3 more subs due at 2:55
