This isn't seduction, it's command: the chorus stops, the men around her step back, the orchestra follows the beat she chooses to sing. The theme she sings is the most whistled melody in French opera — the one anyone recognizes in the first three seconds, even without ever having seen Carmen. Everyone assumes it's Bizet's own. It isn't. Bizet heard this habanera years before writing the opera, thought it was a Spanish folk song and used it without citing a source. It already existed: "El Arreglito", published in 1863 by Spanish composer Sebastián Iradier, dead for ten years by then. When the mistake came to light, there was no pretending it away. Bizet had Iradier's credit printed in the first edition of the vocal score — proof of the borrowing, right next to the music itself. The most famous aria in French opera has carried, since its premiere, another man's signature.
