When I was younger, I spent a lot of time at my grandmother’s house, where my cousins were usually there too. We were extremely close, and I loved being around them because our bond meant so much to me. One day, my grandmother suggested that I watch television in their room because my TV was not working, my phone was broken, and they had access to cable. I ended up falling asleep in the room with my cousins, and while I was only partly awake, one of them touched me inappropriately and continued even though I was uncomfortable and trying to stop it. I was too young to fully understand what was happening or how serious it was, and because I trusted my cousins and cared so much about our relationship, I did not tell anyone. Later, another cousin also behaved inappropriately toward me, and I continued to keep it to myself because I was afraid of losing the bond we had. For a long time, I thought what happened was normal because someone had previously told me that it was, but as I grew older, I realized that it was not normal and that none of it was my fault. I eventually told my mom, and she learned what had happened years after it occurred. Seeing my cousins afterward was difficult because they acted as though nothing had ever happened, while I still remembered it clearly. Even though I cannot change what happened, being able to talk about it now has helped me understand that I was a child who deserved to feel safe, and I should never have had to carry that experience alone.
