Hub and spoke model. Centralizing resources makes operations significantly easier and offers more opportunities for international expansion. For example, before 2022, WestJet was serving London from 3 different airports with the 787. Now that the 787s all fly out of Calgary exclusively, they can deploy some to places like Edinburgh, Rome or Barcelona and have people connect.

It’s one of their key hubs. The and spoke models increase efficiency by having smaller feeder flights all link to a few select points, and then using those nodes to a wider network. It also uses Toronto and Vancouver as hubs. Rumours are they are considering Winnipeg as another but I doubt that will happen.

It’s their hub but it’s the worst place for the layover. They have shit food options and the winters can result in delays/cancelations more frequently than say YVR. That being said if they do end up doing that at least the hotel prices aren’t like Van 😅

It’s because Westjets hq is Calgary. But it’s also because of the funnel method. All airlines funnel rural flights to a major airport then fly those people to another rural airport. It’s very rare to take a flight from 1 rural city like Kamloops and be able anywhere without hitting a major airport first.
