I think the fact that they called you guys then you shouldn’t have worn the shorts - considering they were short when seating down and you knew this. The outfit is absolutely gorgeous but for an establishment that has rules then it was an oversight on your end.

I respect dress codes, but I fear a lot of them are unfair to bigger women. I’ve seen people turned away for similar outfits that I would wear. Which is shocking ‘cause most South Africans aren’t slim.

You know what I am starting to pick up is that these restaurants don’t have such strict rules and regulations when it comes to Eurocentric body type. It’s them ignoring the fact that majority of South African women although skinny, they still have curvy silhouettes. The ‘club’ comment further proves how they perpetuate stereotypes about Black women. And before anyone comments “this applies to everyone”, how many times have you seen a video of a white/coloured woman having such experiences with restaurants .. Exactly!!

The problem with dress codes that are not specific to universally understood concepts, like formal or semi formal, and are focused specifically on how revealing women’s clothing supposedly is it’s far too subjective. One person’s idea of “too short” or “too revealing” may not be the next person’s. Personally, I would steer away from any establishment that puts me in a position to be judged in that way, it can easily be very demeaning.
