SHE QUIT SOFT DRINKS FOR FRESH ORANGE JUICE… THEN SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENED Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has shared a personal story about his wife, Dolly, that has raised serious questions about the safety of the fruits and food we consume every day. Speaking at the Gardeners’ Seminar Open Day in Lagos on August 28, 2026, themed “Leaving the Earth Better Than We Found It,” Osinbajo narrated how his wife had stopped drinking Coca-Cola, Fanta and other carbonated drinks years ago. Instead, she switched to what seemed like a much healthier option: 🍊 A daily glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. But after some time, she began experiencing strange headaches. They reportedly examined what she was eating and drinking, but one thing they never suspected was the orange juice. After all… how could freshly squeezed orange juice be the problem? 🤔 Eventually, she reportedly sent a batch of the juice to a laboratory for testing. The result allegedly came back showing that the juice was not fit for human consumption. 😳 And that led Osinbajo to raise a much bigger concern about how some fruits and vegetables are handled before they reach Nigerian homes. According to him, some farmers and fruit sellers use chemicals—including calcium carbide—to make fruits such as bananas, mangoes, pawpaw and tomatoes appear ripe much faster. He also mentioned other substances, including gamma-lin-20 and phosphite, and cited studies from different Nigerian cities which, according to his account, found evidence of chemical use among some fruit sellers. One study he referenced reportedly found that 10 out of 20 fruit sellers interviewed in Ado-Ekiti admitted using calcium carbide, while another study in Uyo reportedly found usage among 25% of fruit sellers. He also cited a 2023 survey of 50 fruit and vegetable retailers in Lagos, where 22 reportedly admitted using chemicals to preserve produce. If these findings accurately reflect the situation, then this is something consumers cannot afford to ignore. 😟 Because sometimes, the food that looks freshest, biggest and ripest may not necessarily be the safest. But there's an important point here: Not every fruit seller uses dangerous chemicals, and the presence of a chemical in produce cannot be assumed simply because the fruit looks unusually ripe. The real issue is food safety—and how consumers can better protect themselves. Perhaps we need to start asking more questions about where our food comes from, how it is preserved and how it is ripened. 🍊 That “healthy” glass of juice may not be as simple as we think.
