@dr.flexfit: There’s a part of medicine that can sit heavy on your heart. You can know exactly what your patient needs. You can know the treatment could change their life. You can see the path back to walking, working, playing with their kids, or simply living without pain. And then you find out they can’t afford the path there. Before some patients ever receive the care their doctor recommends, they have to meet certain numbers, satisfy certain criteria, get an authorization, fight a denial, or prove they’re sick enough to deserve help. That’s the part that stays with you. Because behind every denied treatment is a real person. A mother who wants to keep up with her children. A father who wants to get back to work. An older adult who just wants to walk through their front door independently again. There are lives that could be different if money wasn’t part of the equation. Healthcare isn’t perfect. I don’t think anybody working in it believes it is. But it’s hard to accept that sometimes the difference between someone getting better and someone continuing to struggle isn’t what medicine can do. It’s what they can afford. Everybody wants to be healthy. The question we don’t talk about enough is: Can you afford to be? #premed #medstudent #medicalschool #doctor #premedstudent
