He founded Stratton Oakmont, a brokerage firm that became notorious for aggressive sales tactics, market manipulation, and securities fraud. Belfort made enormous amounts of money during the 1990s before the firm was shut down and he was convicted of securities fraud and money laundering. He later served prison time and wrote The Wolf of Wall Street, which became the basis for the 2013 film of the same name.
