![(MY HISTORY RANTS ARE BACK 🔥🔥) The Attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7th, 1941) was a surprise aerial attack by the Imperial Japanese military against Pearl Harbor, a naval base, in Hawaii (at the time (1941), Hawaii was a territory, not a state, as it became a state on August 21st, 1959). Imperial Japan believed that attacking Pearl Harbor would allow them to severely weaken the United States’ fleet in order to grant them time to continue their expansion throughout the Pacific and Southeast Asia without interference and increase their defences to consolidate their gains. In January of 1941, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto began developing the plan for the attack, and the plans continued to undergo refinement for eleven months while the Japanese simultaneously worked diplomatically to lessen tensions with the United States. Battleship Row was the name of the eight U.S. battleships in port at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack, and they were the following: the USS Nevada, the USS Arizona, the USS Pennsylvania, the USS Tennessee, the USS West Virginia, the USS Maryland, the USS Oklahoma, and the USS California. All of the battleships were damaged, and two of them were destroyed (the USS Arizona and the USS Oklahoma) while the remaining six were repaired and returned to service. The Japanese strike force consisted of 353 aircraft launched from four heavy carriers— these aircraft included 40 torpedo planes, 103 level bombers, 131 dive-bombers, and 79 fighters. Two heavy cruisers, 35 submarines, two light cruisers, nine oilers, two battleships, and 11 destroyers were also included. 2,403 U.S. personnel were lost in the attack alongside 68 civilians, and 129 Japanese soldiers were [unalived] as well. Anti-Japanese sentiment rose greatly following the Pearl Harbor attack (not only in the United States, but in other countries such as Canada, too). Imperial Japan declared war on the United States and Great Britain on December 7th, 1941, which officially brought the United States into the war. On December 8th, 1941, the United States declared war on Imperial Japan, and on December 11th, 1941, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, making it fully involved in WWII. (Also, a note here at the end because I see this issue a lot: using this as an “excuse” to be racist towards Japanese people/Asian people (specifically East Asians) isn’t right. You can hate Imperial Japan (rightfully so) without being racist.
