It’s incredible how much of a change mixing down the clay creates in the fired glaze and in a way, I’m grateful, as the black I mixed down with my usual high-iron stoneware fires terribly on its own.   During my college years I used to tell myself that when I finally had my own studio, I’d rely on changing clays in order to alter the colour of the glazes, as that way I wouldn’t end up in a workshop that’s crammed with different buckets of glaze. Well, I’d like to say that happened but in reality, I’ve ended up in a workshop that’s stuffed with piles of different types of clay and buckets of glaze… it’s staggering how much space they can take up…   Nonetheless, lately, I’ve been doing this more and more, I start the day by blending some stoneware clays, splitting them into batches and mixing them down with varying percentages of black, red, white and pink stoneware bodies of varying texture; the result being to introduce a subtle change of colours in the range without mixing up tons of new glazes.   I will forever be envious of Ken Matsuzaki’s glaze storage, I apprenticed with him for six-months between 2017-2018 and he has a room just for glazes and with a heated floor no less, so they don’t freeze, buckets stacked in dozens of piles and it was a surprisingly sneaky place for a cosy lunch on the hot tiles.   #pottery #jars #ceramics #handmade #glaze
