@nourishingapothecary: A hysterectomy is not a cure for endometriosis. I posted this a year ago and I still think this conversation is incredibly important. Endometriosis is not simply a disease of the uterus. It involves endometrial like tissue growing outside the uterus, which means removing the uterus does not automatically remove existing endometriosis lesions or guarantee symptoms will disappear. That does not mean hysterectomy is never appropriate. For some women, particularly when adenomyosis, heavy bleeding, uterine pain or other significant pathology is also present, it may form part of a very appropriate treatment plan. But it should not be presented as a universal “fix” for endometriosis. The same applies to hormonal contraception. The pill or Mirena can be very helpful for some women in managing symptoms, but they are not the only pieces of the conversation. Endometriosis is complex and every woman presents differently. In clinic we look at the whole picture including pain patterns, menstrual symptoms, bowel symptoms, inflammation, nutrient status, fatigue, fertility, digestive health, lifestyle factors and how the condition is affecting your everyday life. Naturopathic care does not replace your gynaecologist, endometriosis specialist or surgery when it is indicated. I actually think some of the best outcomes come from a collaborative approach where medical management and supportive naturopathic care sit alongside each other.
