@georgesternleadership: NEW weekend Q&A - lmk what you think? I get a ton of great questions in my DMs and am not able to respond to them all. So I’m thinking about doing some weekend videos answering questions that seem broadly applicable - to managers or employees. Want more of these? Too boring? let me know what you think either way! #boss #work #management

I have one direct report who asked me to do bi-weekly check-ins. So I let her know that unless I mention in the calendar invite it’s for a specific topic, she has control of what she wants to bring to the table. Whether it’s training, discussion of a friction point, or just a casual check-in. But she has control of my time with her. This has made our professional relationship strong as she has gotten to know that even though I am her manager on paper, I am more of her support and safe person at work.

I got super shamed on the last video that you made about this because I had shared that I will often reschedule my staff meetings too. I guess. I probably forgot to say that I meet with everybody every single day and we all share working on and pull together to offer supports when needed.

This video was really nice to watch. I'm not a manager, nor am I employed as in still in education, but it's still so informative watching your videos and how you would respond or handle a situation. Lots of fun to listen to stories and this Q&A was fun too!

actually surprised by the monthly 1-on-1... I have a weekly standing meeting with my manager... and if one gets cancelled here or there it's not a big deal, but he always offers to reschedule before cancelling.

My last job I had 5-6 face to face conversations with my boss across 2 years (including the company Christmas part and my interview). Cushy job. Hated it. Current job is 3x harder, but I talk to my boss weekly for an hour formally face to face, and we have an open line of comms over Teams whenver needed in both directions with a hard cutoff at 5:15. I'll ☠️here.

My boss is genuinely one of the best people I’ve worked for. He always asks if there is anything else I need for support during our one on ones. If we don’t have anything to talk about during our one on ones, we just shoot the shit for a couple minutes. It might not be the most “productive” use of our time but it has significantly increased my respect and appreciation for my boss. My office is going through so many changes rn and everyone in the office is pissed. I am too but my boss genuinely makes it worth it to put up with the bs. A good boss means the world to

as a manager I loved a little 15 minute touch base even if we did end up just talking about random things because work is going well. it makes it really hard when someone cancels the touch base over and over because then when you have something to bring up it's more daunting. and there's nothing wrong with spending 15 minutes getting to know the things that my team cared about and it mattered to them it helps me understand them which is a huge part of leadership.

Also it’s a great time to go through annual goals, and make sure that both sides are doing their best to support their completion.

If you have to talk to your team every day, your micromanaging them and there’s no trust. Your folks should be capable of doing their job jobs and there shouldn’t be a need to check in as a team except maybe once a week and even that’s pushing it.

As an employee I want 1:1s. Yes I am in constant communication with my mgr. however, a 1:1 gives distraction free time to discuss something the employee may not be willing to say in an open office.

Hey George what do you think about ownership not wanting to come together to discuss their only managers pay raise. Person has no repremands, no write ups, is told by 1 owner that they're doing a great job and the other just doesn't have much to do with the day to day running of the company. Said employee hasn't had a raise in 2 years since they were promoted even after their other manager quit unexpectedly leaving said employee to do everything. I feel I should mention this is a company that runs 24/7 365. Manager has also been filling in gaps so shifts get covered for over a year. He's only paid $1 more than the highest paid employee and is making less than the original manager was making. The job market sucks. He's been applying everywhere but hasn't gotten a callback for an interview for anything. What should he do?

The employee will have something at some point. Don’t miss that opportunity to mentor, or better yourself if you cancel. Importantly, don’t assume they know what’s going on. Employees may need to hear again what the goals are and expectations in a good way.

My previous manager did this. She was such a positive force for me. We’re now friends and keep in touch with each others lives long after we stopped working together.

My boss gives me control of our 1:1 time and says if I end up being the one to cancel because we’ve covered my current topics of conversation, and I prefer to have my time back then it’s fine if *I* cancel, but she won’t ever cancel on her end.
