Joining his political movement in the mid-1920s, he quickly rose through the ranks due to his rhetorical skills and deep understanding of mass psychology. Upon his party's rise to power, he took total control of the country's media, arts, radio, cinema, and press. By heavily censoring opposing views and relentlessly promoting official ideology, he played a crucial role in shaping public opinion and building support for the regime's totalitarian policies. ​During the Second World War, he used state media to maintain civilian morale, famously calling for "total war" in 1943 following major military setbacks. He remained one of the government's most loyal figures until the very end of the conflict. In May 1945, as Allied forces closed in on the capital, he briefly assumed the position of Chancellor for a single day before he and his wife took their own lives, along with those of their six children, to avoid capture.
