we have to talk about the romanticized, highly aestheticized version of Slavic Folk magic that circulates on social media… for the historical Polish peasant (chłop), folk magic was entirely utilitarian… the magic came out of poverty, out of the need for survival and anxiety about the unpredictable forces of nature… for daily life and hard field labor, peasants wore simple, rough clothing made out of linen and animal fur/skin for certain items... clothes were often stained by dirt, sweat, and soot as these people worked really hard in the fields/mountains/forests. while yes, we had beautiful regional costumes with embroidery, they were reserved for special occasions like weddings… a chłop would never risk ruining their only few prized fancy clothing pieces to perform a messy magical ritual in a muddy stable… my own great-grandma would walk mostly barefoot (shoes were only for church or winter time). flower wreaths were not an everyday “witchy” accessory either (married women wouldn’t even wear them)... wreaths were made from weeds and herbs, and only really worn for a few days out of the year like summer solstice, first communion or festivals/ weddings etc… in fall and winter we had no access to flowers… to be honest between in Bieszczady no flowers bloom outside of spring and summer… it was too cold! in historical Polish folk practice, magic was a necessity, not some sort of witchy identity… magic was used to heal a sick cow, protect crops from a storm, protect herders from wolf attacks, take off an urok ( evil eye) or stop a child’s fever etc… because it was practical, the tools used were mundane, everyday objects like iron nails, herbs, eggs, pieces of coal, herbs etc. this modern Hollywood-production “slavic witch” aesthetic seems to be a mix of historical folk dress (often from the late 19th or early 20th centuries when some chłopi started to become more prosperous) with contemporary Western Wiccan aesthetics... this is why it is important to discern aesthetics from authority… they do not always go together… as always sending love from the land 🍃🫶🏻 #slavicfolkmagic #witchcraftaesthetic #slavicwitch
