Sometimes you find bad news under the crust. Looking back on the original unboxing videos the crack is obvious but I didn’t notice it (it was obvious on the bottom but not the cooking surface). The crack is in the worst possible location. I’d say cracks are most common on the side walls. It’s possible that a skilled welder could weld a cracked piece of cast iron but it always looks horrible. A repair on the cooking surface/bottom would look terrible and certainly wouldn’t be functional. What caused the crack? The location of this crack makes me believe that this was caused by thermal shock. My guess is at one point this skillet was heated up too hot, too fast (most likely on an electric stove) and the rapid and uneven temperature change caused it to crack. It’s unfortunate but it happens. This is a really cool piece and will still look beautiful after it’s restored and will make a wonderful display piece.
