Basic Face Proportions + Loomis Head Construction — The Sheets Every Portrait Starts With 🧑‍🎨✏️ Two foundational concepts, one post: how to measure the face, and how to build the head in 3D. Facial landmarks (top sheet): 📏 Hairline → eyebrow → nose → ½ upper lip → chin. These 4 evenly-spaced horizontal lines are your map before a single feature goes in. Notice how the red curve tracks the cheek/jaw contour — it’s not a straight vertical drop from cheekbone to chin. Loomis head construction (bottom sheet): 1️⃣ Sphere — the skull starts as a ball, with a center line and eye line marked from the start. 2️⃣ Side planes — flat “wings” attached to the sphere establish where the face turns into the side of the head. 3️⃣ Ear plane — a specific wedge cut into the side plane is exactly where the ear plane fits. 4️⃣ Ear structure — the ear builds onto that plane, following the same red/blue axis lines. 5️⃣ Full head — features, planes, and ear come together into a complete 3/4 view. 📌 One thing to remember: the sphere-plus-planes method (adapted from Andrew Loomis) and the proportional landmarks work together — one gives you the 3D structure, the other gives you where features sit on that structure. keep this — the two-part foundation for every portrait you’ll ever draw. #pencilportrait #loomismethod #drawingtutorial #headconstruction #facialproportions - @aladdin.draws
