@alliestyx: “I can fix him” is one thing. But “I don’t need to fix him, he’s just different with ME” is an entirely different romantic fantasy. From Beauty and the Beast to Damon Salvatore to every morally gray shadow daddy on BookTok… apparently we don’t want the monster gone. We just want exclusive access to the soft version. #romancebooktok #vampires #trope #monsterromancerecs

I think it’s also a form of self harm to be drawn to dangerous men

My experience in evangelical Christianity was that the most devout women related to God EXACTLY like this!! Obsessing over an all-powerful male figure who rarely talks back, while feeling special and mercifully "chosen" while everyone else is wrong and will burn.

I think the whole “My man needs to be mean to every woman but me” is the irl version of that trope. In the books and movie though he never turns on the love interest but in real life human emotions are complex and fickle and one day you will no longer be the exception to the rule.

The idea of being the soft side of a hard man was one of my first favorite romance tropes, starting with princess bride. It took me about 6 years of dating to realize that is way hotter in books and irl.

I think its because it guarantees loyalty and emotional closeness. If he hates everyone but you who would he cheat with? Who else would he talk to... It is also connected with the woman awaking intimacy in the mam so he only talks to her. (The same men fantasise awakening sexuality in the woman)

it's kind of the opposite of reality; safe in public but dangerous in private. the reversal of the typical abusive situation probably feels like safety.

I kinda love the "Dangerous to everyone but me" trope because now we get to play with the idea that the Lead isn't a very good person, either.

Somewhere the idea of "hard and troubled man bettering himself to be with the one he loves, because he believes they deserve better" became "he's objectively a terrible person but he's nice when I'm around because he loves me soooo much" during the natural rotting process of tropes.

What happens when he doesn’t have to win her over anymore? What happens when the relationship is so established he takes her for granted? What happens when she does something he doesn’t like? All of a sudden she goes from “exception” to “everyone else.” In real life, this is when abuse starts. There’s a very good reason not to be intimate with someone without morals. At some point, you won’t be the exception anymore.

Dangerous to everyone but me trope is such a gateway to abuse, rape, murder, etc. Like what starts off as a hot trope just turns into “oh he’s abusing me now but it’s okay cause im the only one he loves”

people don't talk enough about how this is literally how narcissistic tendencies show up in women -- only you are "special" and "wanted" enough that a horrible person could act differently to you. and he will ! for a time. that's literally what love bombing is, & how women get trapped in horrible relationships. the key is to explore why you feel the need to be seen as superior to accept or enjoy love

ironically being with a dangerous man can make women feel safe because they know he is capable of violence to others but as long as they stay on his good side they will be protected. of course in reality this never works out very well

There’s a whole popular booktok book where the MC literally beat the sh*t out of the FC, r*ped her multiple times, have the baby, killed all her friends, calling her a wh*re and she herself calling herself a wh*re (why?) and it’s sooooooo popular. Like this MC murdered multiple people, been with a SW and somehow FC is a virgin. And she defended him btw. I be like that sh*t send feminism 2000 years back 😬

I hate this trope because it fuels (some) women's attraction to abusive men in real life

Yeah she gets an ego trip too because she’s not like others and doesn’t fear him so she feels special

I think it steams from survival and protection. Women want someone ferocious enough to protect them but never feral enough to attack them because they love them so much🤦🏾‍♀️

I feel like it’s because on some level women have historically had to depend on men as protection from other men

It’s not only the actual monsters, all sorts of dangerous and potentially dangerous characters fall into that category. Criminals, mafia bosses, bikers, violent fighter types. The allure of that kind of of relationships is not only being special/chosen/the only one he cares about, but also being protected. Those types of men don’t care about law or social conventions, they will literally destroy whatever threatens their lady. They are going to act, get things done. That’s veeery attractive.

I would add - there is a side to this that says he is my beast on a leash. The power of my allure, or his infatuation for me (also mislabeled “love”) will then lend his power to me. It inherently disempowers the FL to hold the reins of power that he gives her. She becomes empowered when HE decides.
