when I was little I would often escape to my next door neighbor’s homes because I had the feeling my parents didn’t like me; I wonder if my neighbors noticed. I spent every weekend at my aunts house for the same reason; I know that she did… I will never forgive my parents for crushing my spirit at such a young age. I remember sharing my dreams for the future. I wanted to play sports or be an artist or a scientist or swim with whales, and I was met with, “what if you aren’t any good?” So I stopped trying and I stopped dreaming. As I got older and inevitably succeeded in something, I would share those wins with my parents and hear, “that’s not that great. why are you so excited?” so I stopped sharing things with them. I would go through lows so bad that I was catatonic and need to be hospitalized. My parents wouldn’t even acknowledge what happened, so I stopped talking about being depressed. When I got a good job and started thriving and taking care of myself, my parents told me I needed to “get a real job.” I love my fake serving job. And for many reasons, I cut contact with them entirely. Being myself my entire life has been a threat to the people intended to love me and cheer me on, and though I will never understand why, I have nothing in the way anymore. To the little girl sitting on my neighbors couch in that polly pocket necklace, it’s okay now. We’re really funny (you always were), I have dark hair and I wear cool jeans with holes in the knees and makeup that you would love. We have friends that love us and holidays don’t make us sad anymore. The people in our life accept who we are and believe it or not, we laugh like every day and there are SO many dogs. Life is hard but it got really good and fun and i have a kid and he looks just like you… 🖤 #alettertome
