@philipblystonesoccer: Young Players Putting in the Work Great duo session with Mathis and Julian, two phenomenal 2015 players. Mathis plays for SYC MLS NEXT, while Julian plays for Arlington ECNL. It’s been awesome having the opportunity to work with both of them throughout the summer and watch their development. Julian has been playing more as a striker, so we focused on movements through central areas, scanning before receiving, turning, playing with his back to goal, and getting comfortable laying the ball off and combining with attacking midfielders and wingers. Mathis has been playing more as an attacking midfielder, so there was a lot of natural crossover between their positions. Both boys worked on receiving and turning, combination play, and finishing from different areas inside and outside the box. At this age, I think it’s important to continue developing the fundamentals while also helping players better understand the movements and situations they’ll see within their positions. Really proud of both boys and grateful to have worked with them this summer.
