@realkevinjjohnston: WHAT DO I DO WHEN THE CRA CONNECTS MY SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER TO DIGITAL ID? It is always difficult to stay out of a system when a brand-new system is brought in. The Canada Revenue Agency would absolutely love to connect your Social Insurance Number to digital identification. But as we have seen with other Canadian programs, Canada cannot do anything right the first ten times. It will be another decade before that type of thing would be possible or made mandatory in law. As long as we have lawyers and groups like the JCCF fighting for your rights by filing constitutional challenges, this could be delayed indefinitely. But what should you do should they want to merge the two of them? A few of our clients have wisely done legal name changes in the past, even if it is only the middle name. When you legally change your name, everything you have (like driver's licences and your Social Insurance Number) needs to be cancelled and renewed. Renew your driver's licence under your new name, but do not apply for a new Social Insurance Number, and you will never have to worry about that. However, it does mean you are going to either be a businessman or be on contract for the rest of your life.
