@forgotten.black.places: West Grove wasn’t just another Miami neighborhood. Black Bahamian settlers helped build Coconut Grove from the ground up, creating homes, churches, businesses and a community whose culture still lives on today. Their descendants are still here, carrying the history forward through family, tradition and Bahamian celebrations like Junkanoo and Goombay. 🇧🇸✊🏾 Did you know West Grove’s roots were this deeply Bahamian? #WestGrove #CoconutGrove #BahamianHistory #BlackHistory #MiamiBlackHistory
It was leveled by developers because it was a crime ridden cesspool.

West grove is not the good area of the grove though. The grove vibe is the east part of the grove. The west grove is developing now bit it’s still kind of sketchy.

“Bahamians built Miami” describes an important contribution to the LATER city’s development, NOT THE BEGINNING of the area’s history or exclusive responsibility for its construction. Indigenous settlements, Seminole communities, and ENSLAVED BLACK LABOR all belong to Miami’s earlier history. The municipality itself was incorporated in 1896, long after people had lived and worked there.
