If the ticker is 3 or 4 letters, then it may be an ETF. Some examples: VOO, VTI, SPY. an index fund is a fund that holds every company in a set list/index. For example, the S&P500 is an index. VOO is an ETF that tracks that index, so VOO has the same 500 companies as the S&P500. an ETF (exchange traded fund) is a package. it trades like a stock, so the price changes all throughout the day. although there is no official minimum investment, most brokerages let you buy a fraction of a share, so you can start with $1. a mutual fund is another package, but this one has a single price for the day. Usually there is a minimum investment needed of $3000 or so. often times, your 401k will have these as an investment option. so index fund is the what. ETF and mutual fund are the how.
