We are operating under the assumption that he was fully aware of the whole situation. I completely agree that he has a responsibility to protect her and the kids, but it is already established that she was lying to the doctors and not taking all of the meds she was supposed to be taking. And I highly doubt that she said, "Honey, I need you to run some errands so I have time to strangle all three kids." So, maybe him leaving was a lapse in judgment, maybe he thought she had gotten on meds that would prevent her from being a threat to the kids, or maybe she under-played how messed up she was so he wouldn't be suspicious of her. But what we absolutely do know, is that she planned all this out.
