If you grew up in Ghana during the golden era of hiplife, the name Buk Bak will probably bring back memories. They were more than just a music group. They were part of the generation that helped make Ga-language rap a major force in Ghanaian music. The story of Buk Bak Buk Bak was formed in the 1990s, when three young musicians, Prince Bright, Ronnie Coaches and Isaac Shoetan, popularly known as Papa Shoto, came together through their love for rap and freestyle. Bright and Shoetan had already been making music together before Ronnie joined them after school rap competitions. The name Buk Bak came from the expression “book back”. According to Prince Bright, they chose the name because, as young musicians, they were often pushed into the background and told that they would not amount to anything in the music industry. They eventually turned that criticism into their identity. Their breakthrough came with “Komi Ke Kena,” a song whose title refers to kenkey and fish. The song became a huge hit and introduced their unique style to a much wider Ghanaian audience. What made Buk Bak special was their ability to move comfortably between Ga, Twi and Pidgin, at a time when Ga rap was not yet as dominant in mainstream music. They went on to release albums including Komi Ke Kena, Awensem, Nkomhye, Sika Korkor and Gold Coast. Their music produced memorable songs such as “Chingilingi,” “Gonja Barracks,” “Kelewele,” “Trotro” and many others. Buk Bak also played an important role in the development of other Ghanaian artists. They were connected to the emergence of 4×4, helping young talents such as Captain Planet and Coded get noticed. Eventually, Isaac Shoetan left the group to pursue other interests abroad, leaving Prince Bright and Ronnie Coaches as the better-known duo. Bright and Ronnie later pursued solo projects, but they reunited in 2012 and released more music, including “Kolom” and the album Fisherman Anthem. Then came the tragedy that changed everything. On 21 November 2013, Ronnie Coaches died at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after suffering a heart attack. His death effectively brought the Buk Bak era to an end. Prince Bright was left as the surviving member of the famous duo. Today, when people talk about the pioneers of Ghanaian hiplife, Buk Bak deserves a place in that conversation.
