My mare ended up with cellulitis in July because she banged it on the side of her stall walking out to the pasture 🤦🏻♀️. No cuts not even a scratch. Just an overreaction to the impact…. Horses…. 🙄🤦🏻♀️

Only bcuz you asked, I will give my expertise.. while I’ve never had horses, I am a human RN… cellulitis is an infection of the skin / surrounding tissue. As you mentioned she had a cut, which was an open door for bacteria to set up shop. Staph Aureus is notorious on our skin barrier. Infection brings on inflammation and swelling as the immune system responds to the source. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are the standard treatment.

My OTTB had a case of cellulitus with his front leg "the size of a tree trunk" (how it was described to me). Spent a week at the hospital and several staff there told me to prepare my goodbyes because he wasn't reacting to any meds 😭
