Although tensions were often very high and there were several dangerous crises, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, NATO and the Soviet-led bloc avoided direct war because both possessed nuclear weapons, making the consequences potentially catastrophic. The Cold War ended in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved. The Warsaw Pact had already been dissolved, while NATO continued to exist and later admitted many new member countries from Central and Eastern Europe.
