I may get some flack for this—I’ve never believed that ‘tough love’ builds resilience. For years, we’ve been told that kids need to be “toughened up” to handle the real world. That if we don’t push them, discipline them harshly, or let them struggle alone, they’ll grow up weak. The truth is, resilience doesn’t come from being shamed, punished, or forced to “get over it.” It comes from knowing you’re safe—that no matter how hard life gets, there’s someone in your corner. A child who feels seen, supported, and emotionally secure doesn’t crumble under pressure—they rise because they’ve had a strong foundation of connection. I don’t believe in “tough love.” I believe in firm, loving guidance. I believe in setting realistic limits with warmth. I believe in teaching coping skills through co-regulation. It’s a fine balance between being by there side and also not doing for them what they are capable of doing for themselves!
