@.onestatesolutionist: we miss you nasser💔 Gamal Abdel Nasser was an Egyptian military officer, revolutionary and politician who became one of the most important leaders in the Arab world during the 20th century. He was born in Alexandria in 1918 and joined the Egyptian military, where his experiences—particularly the 1948 Arab-Israeli War—helped convince him that Egypt needed major political change. Nasser became a leading member of the Free Officers Movement, a secret group of Egyptian army officers who opposed King Farouk, British influence in Egypt, corruption, poverty and the weakness of the Egyptian government. In July 1952, the Free Officers overthrew Farouk in the Egyptian Revolution, ending the monarchy and eventually establishing a republic. Although Muhammad Naguib initially became president, Nasser was the real political force behind the revolution and gradually took control, becoming prime minister in 1954 and officially President of Egypt in 1956, a position he held until his death in 1970. Nasser’s main political ideas were Arab nationalism, pan-Arabism, anti-imperialism and Arab socialism. He believed that Arab countries had been weakened by European imperialism and that Arabs should cooperate and potentially unite into a stronger political community. He also wanted Egypt to become genuinely independent rather than remaining under Western influence. This made his foreign policy particularly important: he negotiated the withdrawal of British troops from Egypt, supported anti-colonial movements such as the Algerian independence struggle, and increasingly followed a non-aligned approach during the Cold War rather than simply becoming an ally of either the USA or USSR. His biggest international achievement was the Suez Crisis of 1956. Nasser wanted to build the Aswan High Dam to improve irrigation, agriculture and electricity production, but the United States and Britain withdrew their offer of financial support. In response, Nasser announced on 26 July 1956 that Egypt would nationalise the Suez Canal, meaning that control and profits would pass to Egypt. Britain and France were furious because they had major economic and strategic interests in the canal, while Israel also regarded Nasser as a major threat. Britain, France and Israel therefore attacked Egypt in October 1956. Militarily, Egypt suffered serious losses, but politically Nasser emerged enormously strengthened because international pressure, particularly from the United States and Soviet Union, forced Britain, France and Israel to withdraw. Egypt retained control of the canal, and Nasser became a symbol of Arab resistance to Western imperialism, massively increasing his popularity across the Arab world. Nasser also tried to turn his vision of Arab unity into reality. In 1958, Egypt and Syria joined together to form the United Arab Republic (UAR), with Nasser as its president. However, the union collapsed in 1961 when Syria withdrew, showing one of the major weaknesses of Nasser’s pan-Arabism: although many Arabs admired the idea of unity, individual states had their own political and economic interests and were unwilling to permanently surrender sovereignty to Egypt. Domestically, Nasser introduced major social and economic reforms. His government carried out land reforms designed to reduce the power of wealthy landowners, expanded education and healthcare, promoted industrialisation and increased state ownership of important industries. The Aswan High Dam, eventually constructed with Soviet assistance, became a major symbol of Egyptian development and independence. However, Nasser’s rule was also authoritarian: political parties were restricted or banned, opposition was suppressed, and after an assassination attempt in 1954 involving a Muslim Brotherhood member, Nasser launched a major crackdown on the organisation. His biggest failure came with the Six-Day War of 1967, when Israel defeated Egypt and its Arab allies in just six days #fyp #nasser #arab #foryou
