Commando (1985) There’s something about 80s action movies that made even the most ridiculous situations feel completely believable. One man, an entire army, unlimited ammunition — and somehow you never question it. Commando follows John Matrix, a retired elite soldier whose quiet life is shattered when his daughter is kidnapped. The kidnappers expect him to follow their orders. Instead, Matrix decides to take on everyone involved — by himself. Arnold Schwarzenegger is exactly what the movie needs: intimidating, almost unstoppable, but surprisingly funny. The film knows exactly what it is, moving from huge explosions to wonderfully cheesy one-liners without slowing down. 🎬 Small detail: Schwarzenegger reportedly carried many of the film’s weapons himself, and some of the equipment was extremely heavy. The movie also helped establish the larger-than-life action persona that would define much of his career throughout the late 80s and early 90s. Another reason Commando still stands out is James Horner’s unusual score. Instead of a typical military soundtrack, he mixed steel drums and electronic sounds into the action — giving the movie an instantly recognizable rhythm. And then there are the one-liners. Few action movies could turn a brutal fight into a joke quite like Commando. Nearly every confrontation gives Matrix another line that became part of 80s action-movie history. Commando doesn’t try to be realistic. It just wants to be loud, fast and ridiculously entertaining — and 40 years later, it still works.
