I love making these longer teacher videos because when I was learning how to teach, I remember wishing I could just WATCH other teachers teach. There’s something so valuable about seeing someone model a strategy in real time and being able to take the little things that work for you and bring them into your own classroom. You can read all the books and listen to all the podcasts, but there is nothing like actual experience. Today we were working with a group of students who are still developing their skills, so we spent about five minutes practicing how to write a simple sentence. I modeled exactly what I wanted them to do, we did it together, and then I held them accountable for trying it independently. I also have many ELL students who are new to the United States, so I’m constantly thinking about the scaffolds they need to actually access the lesson — sentence frames, word banks, pronunciation support, modeling, and lots of repetition. The goal isn’t to make things easier for our students. It’s to give them the support they need to eventually do it on their own. I hope these videos feel like the classroom observation I wish I had when I was learning how to teach.
