Allah praises the righteous in the Qur’an: “And they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive, saying, ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah, seeking neither reward nor thanks from you.’” (Qur’an 76:8–9). The mention of the captive is especially meaningful because captives in the Prophet’s time could be non-Muslims. This teaches us that hunger has no religion: when someone needs food, a Muslim should show mercy and generosity for the sake of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also encouraged feeding people without limiting kindness only to Muslims. A man asked him, “What is the best Islam?” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “You feed people and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 12; Sahih Muslim 39). Islam also teaches kindness toward non-Muslims who are peaceful toward Muslims. Allah says, “Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair.” (Qur’an 60:8). Therefore, giving food to a poor non-Muslim is an act of kindness that is fully consistent with Islamic teachings. There is a beautiful proverb: “No one has ever become poor by giving.” In Islam, what we give for Allah’s sake is not truly lost. Allah says, “Whatever you spend in charity, He will compensate you for it.” (Qur’an 34:39). A hungry person should first be seen as a human being in need—not divided by nationality, race, or whether they are Muslim or non-Muslim. Feeding a hungry Muslim is charity, and feeding a hungry non-Muslim is also an expression of mercy and good character.
