@madto_therescue0: I’ve spent the last several days on vacation, trying to unplug and reset my brain. But I can’t. These are the faces I can’t stop thinking about. More than 130 dogs housed in a staff-only section of the shelter called “Iso” because there simply isn’t enough room on the adoption floor. Iso was never meant for this. It was intended for court case dogs, bite quarantines, and medical or stray holds. But in the middle of an overpopulation crisis, adoptable dogs can spend weeks back there, out of sight, waiting for space to open up. They’re still available. Their profiles are online. But walking through Iso feels especially heavy. Row after row of dogs, hundreds of them cycling in and out, tucked away in the back of the shelter just hoping someone notices them. There’s a court case dog I visit every day on my lunch break. I hope I’ll be able to share his story one day. But his kennel sits at the very end of a long hallway, and every day it gets harder to walk past all the other dogs just to get to him. The tail wags. The hopeful eyes. The look every single one gives you like maybe — just maybe — this is finally their turn. I hand out treats. I stop to look them in the eyes. And every time, I feel that lump in my throat. There’s only so much we can do. Only so much I can do. But we keep showing up anyway. That’s the hardest part of this work: learning to live in the space between knowing you can’t save them all, and refusing to stop trying. The exhaustion. The heartbreak. The emotional weight of carrying these dogs with you long after you leave the building. Because when you care about animal welfare — whether through volunteering, advocacy, fostering, or making a career out of it — you are choosing to let your heart break over and over again. And yet, these faces are exactly why we do it. Because they deserve every ounce of effort we have to give. Dm me to get involved and become part of the solution.
