Trut, Plyusnina & Oskina (2004, Russian Journal of Genetics) bred foxes purely for tameness, then swapped embryos between calm and aggressive mothers. Temperament still tracked biological parentage, not the mother who raised them. Wang et al. (2018, PNAS) traced the difference to specific brain regions: 146 genes in the prefrontal cortex, 33 in the basal forebrain. In humans, van Drunen et al. (2024, Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience) found heritability of these regions runs 18-59% in mid-childhood, and Schmitt et al. (2019, Cerebral Cortex) found it reaches 62% for cortical thickness by age 17, climbing as high as 97% in adulthood in pooled twin studies. But human aggression itself splits closer to 41% genetic, 16% shared environment, 43% non-shared environment (Rhee & Waldman, 2002, Psychological Bulletin), because unlike the foxes bred for one trait, human traits like aggression involve antagonistic pleiotropy, many genes pulling in different directions at once.
