Hidden inside the world’s tallest skyscrapers is a massive 660-ton golden ball… and it might be the only thing keeping the building comfortable during extreme winds. This giant sphere is called a Tuned Mass Damper. It hangs like a pendulum near the top of the tower. When powerful winds or earthquakes make the skyscraper sway, the huge ball swings in the opposite direction, absorbing the motion and reducing the building’s movement. Without this system, the top floors of a supertall skyscraper could sway several meters, making people feel dizzy and putting extra stress on the structure. The famous damper inside Taipei 101 weighs about 660 tons and can reduce building movement by up to 40% during typhoons and earthquakes. It’s basically a giant shock absorber for an entire skyscraper. Engineering like this is one of the reasons modern megastructures can reach incredible heights while staying safe and stable.
