Its opening was raised above the roof and usually faced the cooler north or northwest breeze. The wind entered high above the street and was directed down a shaft into the main room. Some systems combined that airflow with fountains, water basins, or wet surfaces. As a small amount of water evaporated, it absorbed heat and helped cool the passing air. The cooler air spread through the occupied space while warmer air rose toward high roof openings and escaped. That combination created continuous natural ventilation without a fan or electric motor.
