TW: Domestic abuse and sexual violence. ❓Where’s the booklet for white British men? That’s the question Equality Party Leader Kay Wesley is putting to Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The Home Office has produced a guide for asylum seekers explaining some pretty basic expectations about life in the UK — including gender equality, consent, rape, sexual assault, harassment and domestic abuse. Of course, we should tell everyone what our laws are and what behaviour is unacceptable. But if we're serious about addressing violence against women and girls, let’s base our actions on the facts. In England and Wales, police recorded 209,079 sexual offences in the year ending March 2025. The Crime Survey estimated that around 900,000 people experienced sexual assault. In the same period, 3.8 million people experienced domestic abuse, while police recorded 1.35 million domestic-abuse-related incidents and crimes. While we have these huge, home-grown problems, the political conversation too often turns towards asylum seekers. And where is the evidence for that claim? The government does not even publish the figures showing what proportion of sexual offences are committed by asylum seekers. We should hold anyone who commits a crime accountable, whatever their background. But we also need to stop allowing asylum seekers to become a scapegoat. Tell asylum seekers the law by all means. And then let’s get serious about preventing men’s violence against women and girls across our whole society, through education, prevention, effective action against perpetrators, and proper support for survivors. Prime Minister Andy Burnham: what is your plan? #EqualityParty #VAWG #MensViolenceAgainstWomenAndGirls #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #SexualViolence #DomesticAbuse #Equality #AndyBurnham
