I got a theory on what’s happening here: I think Lanterns (the show) is showing us that there’s a difference between what the Guardians want and what the ring actually decides. Episode 3 pretty much proves that with John Stewart Sr. The Guardians clearly saw him as a great candidate, but the ring still asked him, “Are you afraid?” and when he said yes, it left him. Then it eventually found Hal. So my theory is that the Guardians can recommend or guide someone toward becoming a Lantern, but the ring has the final say. That would also explain why they spent John Jr.’s entire childhood preparing him to become a Lantern. They weren’t actually able to force the ring to choose him — they were trying to make him into someone the ring would accept. And I think that makes Guy Gardner even more interesting. Guy doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of person the Guardians would personally pick, but if the ring is the one making the final decision, it makes a lot more sense. John getting Hal’s ring and feeling empty could also be the show showing us that being chosen by the ring isn’t necessarily the same as knowing who you are. John may ultimately reject it because he realizes he doesn’t want a ring deciding who he’s supposed to be. If that’s where the show is going, then after Hal dies, the biggest question might not be “Who gets the ring?” but “Who does the ring choose?” And that could be exactly how we end up with Guy.
