Today, I’m going to show you how I look after one of the most used tools in my kit, my shovel. A tradesman is only as good as the tools he brings to site, and this is something I learnt years ago from a qualified tradesman I was working with at the time. One day, we finished work early, and instead of knocking off, he made me restore our shovels. At the time, I probably thought, “Why the hell are we doing this?” 😂 But it’s a skill I’ve kept with me ever since. I haven’t bought a new shovel since I started BTP in 2021. That’s five years of getting plenty of work out of the same shovel, simply because I look after it. And that’s the whole point of this video. Tools are expensive, especially when you’re an apprentice and every dollar counts. So before you throw something in the bin and spend money replacing it, ask yourself, can I restore it instead?
