I have an older sister. she has hated and resented me since before I was even born. I'm 34 and we've been estranged for nearly all of my adult life. siblings are NOT built in friends.

when my parents are gone i’m all alone. when they were at work, i was all alone. children aren’t pets, they’re not good dogs, they need people, they need adults around. it seems like when it’s just 1 child anything flies, but that 1 child has to grow up and remember.

At the end of the day it’s not a Mother’s responsibility to worry about their child being lonely when the parent passes, I know it’s easier said than done but the way I see it the child has an entire lifetime to create bonds and friendships to get them through what’s supposed to be the hardest part of their life. Even with siblings that doesn’t mean they will have a lifelong bond or even get a long with each other. I grew up an only child with a step sister on the weekends and I much rather it have been just been me lol, I loved loved loved my life as an only child and never asked for another sibling. DO WHATS BEST FOR YOU!!!!! Don’t let the propaganda machine get you!!!!!

Don’t listen to all the haters. Do what feels right for you. Yes I’ll be alone when my parents go- but I’m determined to build my own family to be a part of. Also, only children tend to have higher educational test scores and higher self esteem. I have never allowed someone to walk all over me bc I know my worth. And my parents really are my favorite people. They are divorced so the relationship I have with both of them is deeply personal and deeply sacred to me, and they have a special bond to each other even post divorce bc of the heavy focus on me and my wellbeing. I’m so lucky to have them

yes please do whatever you and you partner want! being an only sibling sometimes it is very lonely and isolating growing up but environment always plays a part in that. ultimately people have horror stories from both sides so do what you think is best for your family!!

im an only child and all i can think about is when my mom is gone, i will have absolutely nobody. i really don't have friends either. if youre going to have one kid make sure the person you marry is an incredible one. dont choose a bad one and make a child live with it too. please.

I loved many parts about being an only child. Now that I’m an adult and my parents are aging, I worry about having no family someday.

I think either way it’s fine lol obviously if you have one thing you’ll always reminisce about the other. That goes with about anything. I will say tho, there is no life without my sister. When mom and dad get frustrating, you have your sibling. When you have no friends, you have your sibling. When you need someone to understand but you’re too embarrassed, you have your sibling. 2 is probably perfect but ONLY HAVE THE AMOUNT OF KIDS YOURE BEARING TO CARE.

10/10 it’s amazing wouldn’t want to live life any other way it’s literally the best feeling in the world being the entire light of my parents life and knowing every ounce of their love and attention is being poured into me and not being split with a sibling. the opportunities i had with sports and school was insane bc i didn’t have to worry about cost since there was only one child in sports (me), i excelled in school bc both my parents would help me and me alone with school work. it’s literally the best way to parent a child and if you socialize them (i matured in communication very young bc i was always around my parents adult friends) they will be normal and well adjusted. no one has ever accused me of having “only child syndrome” bc if you’re a good parent you won’t raise a brat. overall, a big fan of one and done!

some only children are extremely lonely and others are fully content with being the center of attention. it’s their parents who control the outcome

i am an only child and please ignore the doomsday family comments!! i had a wonderful childhood, feel supported by people outside my family, and would not want to change anything!! having siblings doesn’t guarantee family, i’ve seen a lot of people saying their siblings did not help with their aging parents or grief at all. only children are great just put them in activities so they have friends lol

having a sibling is the best thing that could have happened to me in my life… like genuinely it’s my favorite part of living is having a sister. i feel so sad for everyone who never had a sibling and SPECIFICALLY having a sister. i would never ever want a life without her but if she sees this imma be so mad

People love to fear monger but it really depends. I’m an only child and although i’ve had my moments of wishing I had a sibling (similarly, i’d imagine, to people with siblings sometimes wishing they got to be alone) i’ve had a really happy childhood because both my parents were/are very active in my life and hang out with me a lot and encourage me to pursue my interests and make friends and socialize. A lot of only child angst comes from being socially isolated or expected to parent oneself, so i think as long as you make sure your kid can experience being in groups, working with others, and feeling cared for by their family, it can be totally chill

My parents divorced when I was 1 and since then I’ve gotten to live as an only child and a sister at my dads house. Honestly I love my siblings but my quality of life was always better at my moms and I was never lonely because I had FRIENDS! Just make sure you teach your child to make meaningful connections and they will be fine. To this day no matter how much I love my siblings I will always prefer my moms house where I was an only child

having a sibling doesn't automatically mean they'll be besties. plenty of siblings hate each other even if you try and make them get along.

i’m an only child who had my parents undivided attention and they could full send on my extra curriculars and involvement in my school. sometimes i wish i had a sibling, but part of that journey is building the chosen family. i would also say it made me independent and content in my own solitude. i taught myself a lot just by being alone
