Trump’s main super PAC is spending $10 million to help Ken Paxton in a Senate race that has suddenly become much more competitive. MAGA Inc. launched the major ad buy as Paxton, Texas’ attorney general, faces Democratic state Rep. James Talarico. The latest RealClearPolitics polling average cited in the report gives Talarico a 2.4-point lead. And there is another number worrying Republicans. Talarico has raised roughly $69 million this election cycle, compared with about $9 million for Paxton. Talarico also reportedly has around $21.5 million still available, while Paxton has about $1.75 million. Now national Republican money is moving in. MAGA Inc.’s $10 million investment is expected to include roughly $5 million in ads supporting Paxton and another $5 million criticizing Talarico. The super PAC has plenty more available. Federal Election Commission records show MAGA Inc. has been sitting on nearly $404 million, while D. Trump said he could spend $400 million to $500 million helping Republicans during the midterms. Paxton welcomed the support and thanked D. Trump publicly. He survived an expensive Republican primary against Sen. John Cornyn after receiving D. Trump’s endorsement. But the general election may be an even bigger test. Texas is now one of several Senate contests where Republicans are facing unexpectedly strong competition.
