Crossing the Waves at Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya City It was late afternoon at Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya, and the sea was anything but calm. Strong waves chopped against the ferry as hundreds of travelers queued to board for the crossing to Koh Larn. Amidst the chaotic rush, I caught this moment: a group of Chinese tourists carefully stepping onto the crowded boat while crew members guided them across the shifting gangway. What caught my eye was the contrast between the choppy motion and the sheer routine of it all. The ferry rocked heavily in the swells, mooring ropes straining against the pier, engines humming in the background—yet everything moved forward with a strange, collective calm. Some passengers gripped the railings, others scrambled for seats below deck, while fresh waves of people kept streaming in from the bustling pier behind them. This is the side of Thailand many travelers experience but rarely stop to truly take in: the constant friction and flow of transit hubs, island ferries, and everyday travel along the Gulf of Thailand. Bali Hai Pier is more than just a gateway to Koh Larn. It is a space thick with energy, noise, heat, and raw human moments unfolding every few seconds. As a photographer, scenes like this are all about timing and atmosphere. The warm evening light, the rough water, and the packed deck came together to create exactly the kind of authentic travel moment I look for when documenting Southeast Asia.
