Never said you can’t wear that. Never said turn down the job. They didn’t need to. They just made every choice EXPENSIVE. You want to see your friends? Fine. But now they’re in a mood. “Must be nice to have time for everyone else.” A fight breaks out right as you’re walking out the door. Or the freeze-out waiting when you get home. You wear the outfit? The look. The little laugh. “Who’s that for?” You mention the job offer? A quiet “hmm.” And suddenly you feel selfish for wanting anything that isn’t them. So you adjusted. Not because they told you to. Because fighting for normal things got EXHAUSTING. Easier to cancel. Easier to change clothes. Easier to shrink. You trained yourself. That was the whole design. And here’s the trap snapping shut. Years later you say “you made me give up everything.” And they calmly say “I never stopped you.” And you can’t prove otherwise. No rule. No order.
