The Dearborn City Council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 18, began with a prayer as hundreds of people gathered outside for an anti-Muslim protest and counterprotests. The "Christian Crusader March" is being led by right-wing provocateur Jake Lang with the help of Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who hosted Lang at his church on Sunday. Lang's protests are part of a long history of anti-Muslim protests by some Christian extremists targeting the city over the past 20 years. People in the crowd sprinted to reach Lang when he arrived. As of 6 p.m., Tuesday's rally appears to be the largest crowd Lang has drawn among his five visits to metro Detroit since November. Many in the crowd outside the Henry Ford library were counter-protesters or observers. Several people held American or Christian flags. Some Christians and Muslims outside the library debated religion. Anti-Jewish sentiment was also present at the rally, with at least one Nazi flag present and some people chanting antisemitic remarks and some yelling profanities at Lang, a white-Christian nationalist who has denounced his Jewish Heritage. In a news conference on Monday, Aug. 17, Dearborn officials said they will protect free speech rights and will strictly enforce laws and ordinances to protect public safety.
