In Re:Zero, there is an interesting theory that history does not truly disappear, but instead repeats itself in different forms, as if the events of the past leave traces behind and reshape the present through new characters and relationships. One of the strongest ideas supporting this theory is the mysterious resemblance between characters from the present and figures connected to the past. The first example is Subaru and Flugel. Both are surrounded by mystery, and both seem to have the potential to leave an enormous impact on the history of this world. With the many hints connecting Subaru to Flugel, an important question begins to emerge: Is Subaru following a path that was once walked by someone before him, or are the two connected in a much deeper way than we realize? Then we have Beatrice and Echidna, where the resemblance is not necessarily physical, but instead lies in the relationship and the influence Echidna left behind in Beatrice’s life. Beatrice carries the legacy Echidna left behind, living with memories and promises connected to the past, as if part of Echidna’s world still exists through her. The most obvious example, however, is Emilia and Satella. Their physical resemblance has caused the world itself to view Emilia through the image of Satella, even though Emilia is her own person with her own will and dreams. And this is where the idea becomes bigger than simple similarities between characters. Perhaps the story intentionally shows us that the past can reshape itself within the present, but that does not necessarily mean events have to repeat in exactly the same way. Subaru may be facing a path similar to Flugel’s, Beatrice may carry Echidna’s legacy, and Emilia may stand beneath Satella’s shadow, but each of them has the opportunity to break away from the ending that came before. Perhaps that is the true meaning behind history repeating itself in Re:Zero: it is not that the characters are destined to repeat the mistakes of those who came before them, but that the past places them before the same doors and waits to see whether they will choose the same path or write a new history.
