I used to love playing hide and seek outside at night. Until we played near my old school. It was around 10:30 PM, and me and my friends were running around in the dark. I was the seeker. Everyone else had already hidden. I was counting when I heard three knocks. Knock. Knock. Knock. I stopped counting. The sound seemed to come from a house a few blocks away, near the school. I figured someone was at the door. So I kept counting. When I finished, I started looking for my friends. Then I heard it again. Knock. Knock. Knock. This time it came from the school. I looked over. The school was completely dark. I walked closer, thinking maybe one of my friends was hiding inside. Then I saw something through one of the windows. Someone was standing at the far end of the cafeteria. I couldn’t see their face. I called my friends over. Nobody answered. Then the figure moved closer to the window. And said my name. I froze. It sounded exactly like my granddad. He had been dead for ten years. I didn’t answer. The voice called my name again. This time it sounded like my granddad saying it the way he used to when he wanted me to come inside. My friends finally found me. I pointed toward the window. There was nothing there. We all stared at the cafeteria. Empty. Then one of my friends whispered, “Who were you talking to?” I told him. He looked confused. “I heard it too.” We ran home. The next morning, I went back with my dad. The school doors were locked. But when we checked the security camera outside, we saw something that made me sick. At 10:47 PM, I was standing outside the school window. I was completely alone. And I was talking to someone inside. The camera had no audio. But right before the footage ended, I looked directly at the camera. And mouthed four words. “Granddad, let me in.” I don’t remember saying that. I never even called him Granddad.
