At the Battle of Borodino, Kutuzov fought the French army in one of the bloodiest battles of the campaign before deciding to abandon Moscow to preserve his forces. As Napoleon's army retreated through the harsh Russian landscape, Kutuzov's forces pursued and harassed the French, taking advantage of their exhaustion, supply shortages and dwindling numbers.
