A powerful nor’easter did more than batter the East Coast this weekend. It pulled a piece of history out of the sand on Nantucket. Strong waves uncovered waterlogged timber on the island’s south shore Saturday. The wood, held together by rusted nails and seaweed, is believed to be part of the Warren Sawyer, a schooner that Cr*shed near Miacomet Beach in 1884. The ship was carrying cotton and scrap iron when gale-force winds pushed it off course. Around 11 p.m. on Dec. 22, 1884, it struck Nantucket’s shore. This was not the first time pieces of the vessel had appeared. More fragments were uncovered in December 2022. After months of research using historical records, photographs and archaeological evidence, scientists concluded the material most likely came from the Warren Sawyer. There was still one problem. Some of the fastening hardware did not fully match the ship’s historical records, so researchers could not make the identification completely certain. Then the 2026 storm arrived. As huge waves tore through the shoreline, more of the buried remains became visible while beaches across Nantucket suffered heavy erosion. The nor’easter also left a much darker trail across the East Coast. A 56-year-old New York City worker, Leighton Brown, was K*lled by a fallen tree, while an unidentified swimmer disappeared from the waters off Long Island. One storm revealed history beneath the sand while reminding everyone how quickly nature can change the present. What would you do if a storm uncovered a piece of history in your hometown? #Nantucket #NorEaster #History #ShipDiscovery #newengland
