oh man I hated going to seminars because of how no one spoke to each other. I have autism and anxiety; I TRIED talking to people but they just stare at you like Ur insane and the sheer volume of awkward social interactions just ruined me so I never turned up after a few weeks of trying

Seminars work when ur professor lets you make a speech/manifesto for a politician that has sorry by Justin beiber playing in the background. If the seminars make me feel like I want to die I will not go

It's obviously the responsibility of the students to turn up, but I don't think people realise how off-putting some of the lecturers can be. Leading a seminar is a skill, and not all of them have it. If people turn up to the first few seminars and come away with nothing, why would they keep going?

because it’s entirely dependent on the seminar leader. if i can get more from having a casual conversation with my course mates nobody is going to show up

I was the only person to turn up to one of my seminars it was so awkward. Most weeks this seminar only had like 5/6 people

We had a seminar that had 25 people, in the final week there was five of us there, four of us who were on time and one person showed up late. I also don’t understand why they’d skip this one because we didn’t actually use slides, we would work together on questions that we would be assessed on at the end and so it was actually really helpful so I don’t get why people didn’t even go

Universities really need to make attendance compulsory. At my uni some courses like nursing and midwifery have a minimum attendance of 80% I believe. I wish all courses were like that.

so many of my lectures and seminars were reading off of slides, i probably had 2 truly helpful seminars this year, it's really disappointing considering how much we all pay, id honestly rather sit in bed and do my notes then treck to class and do something i can do myself

One of my seminar leaders moved a popular text from week 11 to week 8 so we’d study it before Easter Break, he knew nobody would turn up once the uni opened again 😅

There are some lecturers who are genuinely offputting, but that’s never been smth I encountered on my course (only rlly on electives tbh). All my course lecturers are lovely and so engaging, and yet of about a class of 20, for one seminar by the end of term literally only I was showing up😭. Got to the point that we would just conduct the seminar at an on campus cafe instead.

It really upset me tbh - I'd do all of the reading and show up ready to actually work and then no one else had done the reading or no one attended. Then those same friends who were constantly skipping did their final essay quicker because they just did the essay and didn't attend anything 😡.

More and more universities WILL remove students from programs/courses for failing to attend without genuine reasoning

it definitely depends on the lecturer. i had a 9-11 and loved it, everyone turned up because it was interactive eventhough it was at 9am. had another one at 9am and rarely anyone went because she pressured everyone to answer every question and you couldn't repeat what someone else said😭
