I had a bat in my house that probably had no chance of ever coming in contact with my bf and I, and I STILL made us get rabies shots. Just got the last one Friday.

The fatality rate is actually something like 96% bc there are very few cases of people being cured from symptomatic rabies. One of them was a girl from the US, I read a paper on how the doctor did it, it was quite interesting.

I’m a veterinarian, so I advocate for thr rabies vaccine every day. I work in North Carolina and have owners tell me rabies doesn’t exist in the US, when just a few months ago a cat tested positive within the county…A dog just tested positive in Louisiana, where I went to school. The rabies vaccine is required by law in the vast majority of states in the US (and I don’t know why it isn’t federal). The vaccine is for the protection of humans moreso than animals. Just vaccinate your animals when they’re of age, please, and continue to vaccinate when their boosters are due. We are so tired. 🙈

And here I got bit by a bat and thankfully it didn’t have rabies and trust and believe those first rabies shots for rabies HURT like hell !! Right in the tip of my finger 😭😭

I think rabies vaccinations are good, but afterwards, bloodtests should be enough, not shots every 3 years for pets when it mostly lasts 10 years 😢😢

I work in vetmed and the amount of people I have to convince to get the rabies vaccine for their cat or dog is infuriating. I have no shame in strong-arming them. We have a strict policy that pets must be vaccinated against rabies by their second visit with us. It’s a legally required vaccine. Rabies is no joke, and your vet staff does not want to deal with the rabies treatment shots or having to decapitate your pet to send their head to a lab so the brain can be tested for rabies. JUST GET THE VACCINE.

1. The Rabies vaccine is reportedly used off-label to give to goats anyway & 2. They were babies & too-young to be vaccinated, apparently. 3. The owners apparently dispatched with the skunk that was “acting funny” 🙄🤦🏻♀️and burned the body instead of turning it over to be TESTED!!! 4. The owners are 100% Liable for all of this & should be facing ALL the charges possible AND lawsuits. I just don’t know what those charges/suits would be based on… Negligence, to start, I would HOPE to Sanity, at the very least…!

As someone who works in veterinary medicine potential rabies exposure has always been something that we take very seriously. I had to get the rabies vaccine while I was in school to become a vet tech. It horrifies me that this is something that the general public has to worry about and that people aren’t taking it seriously

Just spent way too much money to update all my livestock... we're comparatively low risk, but I'm not willing to gamble with rabies. My male Anatolian caught a skunk earlier this year, and while there were no obvious signs the skunk was infected, and my dog had no visible wounds, and he was current on his vaccine, I still updated it out of an abundance of precaution. my biggest fear in life is prion disease, but rabies is up there too.

I'm in North Carolina, and there have been so many animals (foxes, skunks, and cats) popping up with rabies in and around my area. I'm curious as to how badly rabies prevention programs may have been affected to this point that we are seeing such an increase.
